Banks to Remain Shut for 4 Straight Days! Here's Why RBI Has Declared a Holiday on Monday Too, and What Options Customers Have

JAIPUR:Normal operations at banks across the country will be disrupted for the next four days starting today, September 11. This extended period of bank closures began with the nationwide bank strike called for September 11 by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU). Following the strike, banks in several states will remain shut on the second Saturday, Sunday, and then on account of Ganesh Chaturthi — directly affecting branch-level banking operations.

Why Will Banks Stay Shut for 4 Straight Days? The Full Calendar

  • September 11 (Friday): Nationwide bank strike led by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU).
  • September 12 (Saturday): Regular bank holiday across the country, being the second Saturday of the month.
  • September 13 (Sunday): Weekly off.
  • September 14 (Monday): Bank holiday in relevant states under the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) holiday calendar, on account of Ganesh Chaturthi.

(Source/Report: Moneycontrol News) — It's important to note that the list of bank holidays varies from state to state depending on local festivals, so customers are advised to confirm their region's bank holiday calendar. The RBI's official holiday calendar can be checked via the relevant link.

Why Was the Strike Called on September 11? Key Demands

The unions organized this strike against the government and bank management over several long-pending demands. The central issue behind the strike is the implementation of a 5-day work week. This demand is based on the agreement and joint note signed between the Indian Banks' Association (IBA) and bank unions on March 8, 2024.

Under the proposed arrangement, all Saturdays except the second and fourth of the month would be declared bank holidays, while in exchange, employees' daily working hours from Monday to Friday would be extended slightly. In addition, bank unions are also opposing the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) structure applicable to senior bank officers and are demanding changes to it.

Will All Services Be Shut? What Happens to Online Banking and UPI?

Despite bank branch doors being closed, digital banking services will continue uninterrupted. Regular customers can use UPI, internet banking, and mobile banking for routine fund transfers, bill payments, and online banking services without any disruption. ATMs and other self-service banking facilities are expected to remain available for cash withdrawals.

However, processes that require an in-person branch visit — such as submitting physical documents, cheque clearance, and Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures — may face disruptions or delays during these four days.

What Are the Options for Customers, and What's the Advice Going Forward?

For any branch-related work, customers are advised to contact their respective branch before visiting, or to turn to digital options instead. Using a mobile app or internet banking will be the easiest option for simple transactions, sending money, and paying bills. Those with cheques in process should plan their financial decisions in advance, keeping these four days of closures in mind.

Warning of More Strikes in the Coming Days

If an agreement is not reached on the bank employees' demands, banking services could be affected again in the coming period. Bank unions have also announced further strikes for September 28, 29, and 30. Following that, an indefinite strike has been planned starting October 26, 2026.

While banks say they will make arrangements to minimize inconvenience to the general public, delays in services at the branch level cannot be ruled out.
