Reliance Jio has announced it will commence 6G technology field trials in Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru by the third quarter of 2026, making India one of the earliest countries globally to pilot sixth-generation wireless technology. The trials will use spectrum in the sub-THz band and focus on ultra-low latency applications including remote surgery, autonomous vehicles and immersive AR/VR communications.
Jio's parent Reliance Industries has already invested over Rs 45,000 crore in research and development for 6G, working alongside domestic academic institutions and the government's Bharat 6G Alliance. The company has developed proprietary 6G technology stack in India, positioning it to be a global exporter of telecom technology rather than just an importer.
Commercial 6G launch is expected no earlier than 2028, but the early trials will help Jio establish spectrum use cases, refine network architecture and position itself ahead of global peers. Telecom minister Jyotiraditya Scindia called the development a proud moment for India's Digital India vision and self-reliance in critical technology infrastructure.
