Wipro Limited announced the acquisition of Synapse AI, a Silicon Valley-based artificial intelligence startup specialising in enterprise AI agents and large language model deployment, for $1.2 billion in an all-cash deal. The acquisition, Wipro's largest in five years, significantly bolsters the company's generative AI capabilities and adds approximately 800 AI specialists with deep expertise in model fine-tuning, RAG architecture and AI safety frameworks.
Synapse AI, founded in 2021, had raised $320 million in venture capital at a valuation of $800 million before accepting Wipro's offer at a premium. The startup's proprietary AI agent orchestration platform has been adopted by over 60 Fortune 500 companies for automating complex enterprise workflows in finance, HR and supply chain management. Its technology will be integrated into Wipro's ai360 platform and offered to clients globally.
Wipro CEO Srinivas Pallia said the acquisition is a key element of the company's strategy to compete with larger peers TCS and Infosys in the rapidly growing AI services market. The deal is expected to be accretive to earnings per share from the second year post-acquisition. Analysts broadly welcomed the move, noting that Wipro needed a significant capability injection to close the gap with the AI capabilities of its larger Indian IT peers and global competitors like Accenture and IBM Consulting.
