GIFT Nifty rises, crude oil falls: gap-up signals for Indian stock market

Indian equity markets are set for a strong start on 5 November 2026. A sharp drop in crude oil, a powerful rally in US markets and solid domestic economic data have lifted investor confidence. At around 8:53 AM, GIFT Nifty was trading at 24,287, up 337 points (1.41%) from its previous close of 23,950. This is being seen as a signal that the Nifty and Sensex could open sharply higher.

1. Crude Oil Drops More Than 9%

The biggest relief for India has come from crude oil. According to the market report, global benchmark Brent Crude has fallen more than 9% and slipped to around $93 per barrel. India imports over 80% of its crude oil requirement, so cheaper oil lowers company costs, improves margins and eases pressure on inflation. It can also provide some support to the rupee.

2. US Midterm Elections and the Wall Street Rally

According to the report, Democrats have won in both chambers of the US Congress in the midterm elections. The market is reading this as a sign of policy stability. With election uncertainty out of the way, Wall Street saw strong buying last night:

  • Dow Jones: up about 3% (roughly 1,555 points), around 53,362
  • S&P 500: up 1.69%, around 7,718

As per the report, the Dow's jump is its biggest one-day gain in the past 18 months. Dow Futures were also 0.29% higher in the morning.

3. Record GST Collection and the FII Trend

The domestic picture is strong too. In October, GST collection rose 22.9% year-on-year to an all-time high of ₹2.31 lakh crore. This points to robust consumption and economic activity. According to the report, the continuous selling by foreign institutional investors (FIIs) now appears to be easing, and they are returning as net buyers. The return of FIIs is considered a major support for the market.

4. Impact of Q2 Results

September-quarter corporate results are reported to be better than expected. According to the report, Nykaa has posted a 197% jump in profit. Today, results are due from heavyweights such as Bharti Airtel, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), LIC, ONGC and Titan, so these stocks could see action.

Asian and European Markets

The impact of the US rally was not uniform across Asia. In morning trade:

  • Hang Seng (Hong Kong): +3.29%, around 24,706
  • Nikkei (Japan): -0.44%, around 61,913
  • Kospi (South Korea): -3.73%, around 5,471

In Europe, the FTSE 100 was up 1.79% and the CAC up 1.96%, while the DAX was 0.17% lower. According to the report, pressure on the Kospi and Nikkei is due to technical factors and profit-booking in chipmakers such as Samsung.

Sectors and Stocks to Watch

According to experts, the fall in crude oil could directly benefit these sectors:

  • Paint companies: Asian Paints, Berger Paints
  • Aviation: InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo)
  • Oil marketing companies: BPCL, HPCL

In addition, Bharti Airtel, M&M and Nykaa are expected to see heavy volumes on the back of their results.

What Will Matter for Investors?

After a gap-up opening, the real question is whether the rally sustains. The Brent Crude level, whether FII buying continues, and the results of the heavyweight companies due today will be key. Profit-booking after the initial surge is also possible.
