Market Rallies for a Second Straight Day: Sensex Closes at 74,459 on IT and Pharma Strength, Nifty Above 23,050
The Indian stock market ended higher for the second consecutive session today. Global cues were mixed and high crude oil prices weighed on sentiment, but buying in the domestic market held firm. Heavyweight IT and pharma stocks kept the market steady.
How the Sensex and Nifty Fared
The BSE's 30-share Sensex gained 308.49 points, or 0.42%, to close at 74,459.53. The NSE's Nifty 50 rose 116.35 points, or 0.51%, to 23,053.10. The Nifty's close above 23,050 is seen as psychologically significant for the market.
Crude Worries, but Sector Buying Dominates
With Brent crude holding around $116 per barrel, investors stayed a little cautious. Expensive oil is a concern for an importing country like India because of its impact on inflation and the current account deficit. However, the US Federal Reserve's decision to hold interest rates steady supported the market.
By sector, the Nifty IT index closed 2.3% higher and the Nifty Pharma index 1.8% higher. Among largecaps, Infosys and Sun Pharma saw good buying. Trent rose more than 6%, while IndiGo was also among the Nifty's top gainers. On the other hand, big names such as Adani Ports, Shriram Finance and M&M came under pressure, with Adani Ports slipping about 1.18%.

Market Outlook: What Next?
Although the indices closed in the green, the picture in the broader market was weak. The smallcap index fell as much as 1.8% during the day. In other words, the rally was limited to select large stocks, while investors booked profits in smaller ones.
According to technical analysts, large investors are pulling money out of smallcaps and moving it into safer largecap sectors such as IT and pharma. They assess that 22,800 will act as strong support for the Nifty in the coming sessions. On the upside, holding around 23,050 will be important for market sentiment.
What matters for investors: Crude oil prices, the US Fed's stance and the remaining quarterly results will decide the market's direction in the coming days. For stocks that have moved 15-20% up or down, it is better to watch company fundamentals and volumes than to decide in haste.
