This week, the Defence Acquisition Council chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh approved proposals for military hardware worth around 52,000 crore, thereby speeding up India's defence procurement machinery. The new Chief of Defence Staff, General N S Raja Subramani, attended his first Defence Acquisition Council session along with the army Chief general Dhiraj Seth, and the Navy Chief, Admiral Krishna Swaminathan. The timing is significant as it suggests that it will continue on the same path under the new leadership.
What got approved
The Defence Acquisition Council also approved a number of mojar defence procurement proposals to boost Inida's air defence and surveilance capibilities. The Army will also be equipped with the indigenous Akash Tarang electronic warfare system for jamming drone communications and also with man-portable anti-tank guided missile, medium-range surface-to-air missle (MRSAM) systems and very short-range air defence systems (VSHORADS) developed by the DRDO. The navy is getting advanced sea mines and ship-borne drones to beef up maritime security, while the air force will receive high-altitude pseudo-satellities for persistent surveillance.
DRDO successfully test-fired the Pinaka long-range guided rocket this week at Chandipur. The navy will commission its sixth Project 17A stealth frigate INS Mahendragiri, at Visakhapatnam on July 11, a month after INS Dronagiri joined the fleet.
Aurelius's business view: Where the money likely flows
For investors tracking India's defence sector, procurement announcements like this typically translate into order-book gains for a familiar set of players, though actual contract allocation will only become clear once individual tenders are finalised .
Bharat Electronics (BEL) - As india's principal supplier of radar and missile-guidance electronics, BEL is the natural frontrunner for MR-SAM and V-SHORADS-linked work.
Bharat Dybanics Limited (BDL), India's dedicated missile manufacturer, stands to benefit from the anti-tank and air-defence missile production scale-up.
Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders (MDL) - The INS Mahendragiri commissioning underscores MDL's steady frigate-building pipeline, of MDL, although this specific ship is not part of the new Rs 52,000 crore package.
Tata Advanced Systems and Larsen & Toubro both have expanded footprints in drones and electronic warfare manufacturing as private players gain a bigger share of India's defence production under the Atmanirbhar Bharat push.
This procurement cycle fits a broader pattern: India's defence production hit a record high of 1.78 lakh crore in FY2025-26, while defence exports crossed 38,000 crore, a 60% year-on-year growth. These are policy-level approvals and not signed contracts at this time. The actual revenue impact on listed defence companies will depend on how quickly individual orders are placed and executed.
