Indian Economy 2026-27: GDP Growth at 7.8%, but Rupee Near 95 and FPI Selling Continues; How Much Will the UP Election 2027 Matter for Markets?

Amid the West Asia crisis and expensive crude oil, India's economic numbers are strong, but markets and the rupee are under pressure. On one side, the IMF has raised India's growth forecast. On the other, foreign investors are selling at a record pace. Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh assembly election, expected in early 2027, has come onto investors' radar.

Growth: IMF and RBI both raise forecasts

On October 13, the IMF raised India's FY27 GDP forecast from 6.4% to 7.0%. Its FY28 forecast is also 7.0% (earlier 6.7%). The revision came after the RBI's latest policy decision, in which the central bank raised its FY27 estimate to 7.1%. According to the IMF, global growth will be just 3.1% in 2026.

In the April-June quarter, GDP grew 7.8% (6.9% a year earlier), beating the Reuters poll estimate of 7.1% and the RBI's 7.0% projection. Real GDP stood at ₹81.36 lakh crore and nominal GDP at ₹88.27 lakh crore (+10.3%). Key figures for the quarter:

  • Manufacturing: +9.2%
  • Construction: +7.7%
  • Gross fixed capital formation (investment): +20.4%
  • Agriculture: +3.6% (4.4% last year)
  • Mining: -2.4%

In other words, growth came mainly from industry, services and investment, not from agriculture or mining. The next quarterly GDP data is due on November 30.

Trade: exports strong, deficit lower year on year

In September, merchandise exports rose 23% to $44.4 billion. Imports rose 8% to $74.61 billion. The trade deficit was $30.21 billion, lower than $33 billion a year ago, though higher than $26.86 billion in August. During April-September, exports rose 18.51% to $259.89 billion, but imports rose 16.31% to $437.53 billion. As a result, the half-year deficit stands at $177.64 billion, up from $156.88 billion last year.

Pressure points: rupee, FPIs and crude oil

On October 26, the rupee traded around 94.9-95.2 per dollar. Over the past month it has strengthened by about 0.76%, but it is down roughly 8% year on year. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) pulled out ₹3.04 lakh crore in 2026 up to October 9, compared with ₹1.66 lakh crore in all of 2025. In the first few days of October alone, ₹44,166 crore went out. The Nifty is down about 13.9% this year. Brent crude was around $108 per barrel on October 21, while the IMF's forecast assumes an average of $95.74 for 2026.

UP's economy: what the data says

According to Uttar Pradesh's first-ever Economic Survey (2025-26), the state's GSDP grew from ₹13.30 lakh crore in 2016-17 to ₹30.25 lakh crore in 2024-25 (CAGR 10.8%). The ₹36 lakh crore figure for 2025-26 is the state government's projection, not a final number. The state accounts for about 9.1% of the national economy, per capita income is ₹1,09,844, and the debt-to-GSDP ratio is stated at 28%. The target is a $1 trillion economy.

The election: arguments from both sides

The election for 403 seats is expected in early 2027. The BJP has been in power since 2017 and is building its case on its infrastructure and investment record. The Samajwadi Party (in alliance with the Congress) is alleging public discontent and economic mismanagement by the government. The BSP has said it will contest alone. These are political claims, not economic facts.

Market impact: what history shows

On the day of the UP results in March 2022, the Sensex rose 817 points (1.5%). According to analysts, the effect of state elections usually lasts only a few sessions. Some observers see a big mandate as a signal of policy continuity, while market direction is ultimately set by global factors, crude oil and FPI flows.

Rating: CAUTIOUS (phased investing via SIP)

Fundamentals are strong, but oil, the rupee and FPI selling all remain risks. Investors should keep their portfolios diversified rather than betting on any single election outcome.

Key Signals to Watch: Brent crude, the rupee's 95-96 level, weekly FPI data, the November 30 GDP release, and Election Commission dates.

30-second summary: The IMF raised FY27 growth to 7.0% and Q1 GDP came in at 7.8%, but the rupee is near 95 and FPI outflows have crossed ₹3 lakh crore. The market impact of the UP election has usually been short-lived.
