Stock Market Today: Sensex, Nifty End Lower for 3rd Session

Stock Market Today: Sensex, Nifty Fall for Third Straight Session, Nifty Ends at 22,620; Apollo, Max Slump Over 5%

Indian equities closed lower for the third consecutive session on Wednesday after a volatile day. The BSE Sensex fell 48.78 points (0.07%) to 72,480.29, while the NSE Nifty shed 95.75 points (0.42%) to end at 22,620.45. The Sensex had been up about 400 points at one stage, but the gains did not last. According to Business Standard, a rebound in oil prices and fading hopes of a US-Iran resolution soured sentiment.

Closing Data

  • Sensex: 72,480.29, down 48.78 points (previous close: 72,529.07)
  • Nifty 50: 22,620.45, down 95.75 points (previous close: 22,716.20)
  • Nifty intraday low: 22,595.20 (Angel One)
  • Nifty Midcap 100 / Smallcap 100: up about 0.02% / 0.27%

IT Stocks Steadied the Market in the Morning

The market opened lower. Per India TV, the Sensex started 87.92 points down at 72,441.15 and the Nifty 51.2 points down at 22,665. IT stocks then powered a recovery. At 12 noon, the Sensex was up 298.54 points at 72,827.61 and the Nifty at 22,742.50 (Business Standard). TCS was the top gainer in early trade, with HCL Tech and Tech Mahindra also in the green.

Oil and US-Iran Tension Spoiled the Rally

According to CNBC, US President Donald Trump denied he was willing to ease sanctions on Iran, even as Qatar pushed for peace talks. Brent crude then rose 1.11% to $103.73 a barrel in early Wednesday trade (as of 01:31 GMT). The previous session had seen oil fall on a recovery in Middle East supply. For a major oil importer like India, costlier crude weighs on the rupee, inflation and corporate margins alike. The rupee hovered near 96 per US dollar around midday, with the RBI stepping in to support it amid heavy outflows linked to oil volatility (Business Standard). A further rise in long-term US Treasury yields also kept pressure on global markets (India TV).

FII Pressure Persists

According to NSE data cited by niftytrader, foreign institutional investors held a net short position of about 2.67 lakh contracts in Nifty index futures as of September 29. At the start of the September series on August 25, it was 1,84,227 contracts (Business Standard). In other words, foreign investors have added to their bearish bets. Our view: a short position this large can mean a choppy market, and it also raises the risk of sharp short covering.

Healthcare Takes the Biggest Hit

Hospital stocks fell on concerns over a price cap on private hospital room rents. Per Angel One, Apollo Hospitals fell 5.70% to Rs 8,165.50 and Max Healthcare fell 5.33% to Rs 929.80. BSE Ltd was also among the top Nifty 50 losers. Among sectors, Nifty Healthcare, Pharma, Consumer Durables and Metal declined the most.

Banks, Realty and Defence Show Strength

Nifty Realty, Private Bank and Media indices gained the most. Kotak Mahindra Bank rose 2.71% to Rs 417, InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) gained 2.30% to Rs 4,984, and ICICI Bank added 2.28% to Rs 1,321.70 (Angel One). In realty, Prestige Estates, Brigade Enterprises and DLF led. In defence, Axiscades Technologies jumped over 8%.

Nifty Holds a Key Support

According to TradingView, this is the first time since the Covid crash that the Nifty has come down to its 200-week moving average, currently around 22,600. Today the index dipped below it intraday, to 22,595.20, but closed at 22,620.45. The bulls defended the support, but the margin is very thin.

Nifty: CAUTIOUS
Private Banks: CAUTIOUS BUY (relative strength today)
Hospital Stocks: AVOID (until clarity emerges on the price cap)

For traders

  • Swing (1-4 weeks): A close below 22,600 could add to weakness. Resistance is seen around 22,750.
  • Positional (1-3 months): Track Brent crude, US-Iran headlines and FII positioning.
  • Long term: Stagger entries into quality stocks on declines rather than rushing in.

Key Signals to Watch

  • Nifty holding above 22,600
  • Brent crude and US-Iran talks
  • Changes in FII short positions in index futures
  • The rupee's 96-per-dollar level
  • News on the private hospital price cap

30-Second Summary
