JAIPUR: Global brokerage reports on a handful of Indian stocks were in focus on Wednesday as investors assessed the latest views from some of the world's major financial institutions.
Morgan Stanley, JPMorgan, Citi and Jefferies have evaluated these companies based on their business performance, earnings outlook, future growth prospects, valuations and sector trends before issuing their latest ratings and target prices.
The reports offer an indication of where major brokerages see potential upside and where they believe investors should remain cautious.
This time, the strongest confidence is visible in the defence and cables segments. Meanwhile, the IT sector continues to face concerns around a slow recovery in demand and the impact of artificial intelligence. Rising competition also remains a key challenge for the paints industry.
HAL: Citi Remains Positive, Sets ₹6,175 Target
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) remains one of the key defence stocks on Citi's radar. The brokerage has maintained its Buy rating on the stock with a target price of ₹6,175.
According to Citi, HAL has several potential growth drivers ahead. An improvement in engine supplies for the Tejas Mk1A fighter aircraft could support the company's execution, while opportunities in helicopters and other defence programmes could further strengthen its business outlook.
The government's increasing focus on domestic defence manufacturing is another major positive for HAL. On September 7, the Defence Acquisition Council approved defence procurement proposals worth around ₹1.1 lakh crore, with nearly 98% of the procurement planned from domestic sources.
HAL already has a strong order book. If the company executes these orders on schedule and deliveries accelerate, both revenue and profitability could benefit over the coming years.
This is one of the key reasons Citi believes the stock has room for another re-rating.
However, for investors, the key issue will be execution. Winning large orders is only one part of the story; the pace at which HAL converts those orders into actual deliveries and revenue will be equally important.
Finolex Cables: Jefferies Remains Bullish
Jefferies has maintained its Buy rating on Finolex Cables, with a target price of ₹1,410.
The brokerage's positive view is supported by the company's strong Q1 FY27 performance and its planned capacity expansion.
Finolex Cables reported around 44.3% year-on-year revenue growth in the first quarter, with revenue reaching ₹2,013 crore. Net profit increased by around 53% to ₹249 crore.
EBITDA also recorded a strong increase of around 79% to ₹244 crore. The company's EBITDA margin improved from 9.8% to 12.1%.
The optical fibre business has also performed well. Finolex is working on expanding its production capacity, while its electrical cables business remains a core growth engine. Solar and EHV-related opportunities could provide additional growth avenues going forward.
In simple terms, the company is seeing higher sales, stronger profits and improving margins. This combination is supporting Jefferies' positive view on the stock.
Infosys: JPMorgan Maintains Neutral Rating
JPMorgan remains relatively cautious on IT major Infosys. The brokerage has maintained its Neutral rating with a target price of ₹1,050.
According to JPMorgan, spending by IT clients has not yet seen a meaningful acceleration. In particular, discretionary technology spending—spending that companies can delay or adjust depending on business conditions—is recovering only gradually.
The increasing adoption of AI is another factor that could create challenges for traditional IT services companies.
AI and automation allow businesses to complete more work in less time and at lower costs. While this can improve productivity for clients, it could also put pressure on pricing and demand for some traditional IT services over time.
Competition within the IT services industry is also increasing. Large technology companies may have to compromise on pricing to win major contracts, potentially putting pressure on margins.
For now, JPMorgan's stance on Infosys can be described as neither strongly bullish nor bearish. The brokerage appears to be waiting for clearer signs of a recovery in technology spending and overall demand.
Nykaa: Morgan Stanley Raises Target Price
Morgan Stanley remains positive on Nykaa, the beauty and fashion-focused consumer internet company. The brokerage has maintained its Overweight rating while raising its target price from ₹321 to ₹356.
Morgan Stanley sees significant growth opportunities as online beauty shopping and organised retail expand in India. Rising demand for premium beauty products could also support Nykaa's long-term growth.
The company's fashion business could provide another growth opportunity in the coming years.
However, valuation remains an important factor for high-growth companies such as Nykaa. If a large part of the expected future growth is already reflected in the stock price, even strong earnings may not necessarily result in a sharp rise in the share price.
Investors, therefore, will need to track not only revenue growth but also profitability, margins and cash flow.
Berger Paints: Morgan Stanley Remains Cautious
Morgan Stanley continues to take a cautious view of Berger Paints. The brokerage has maintained its Underweight rating, although it has raised the target price from ₹429 to ₹440.
The key point here is that the target price has been increased even though the rating remains Underweight.
This suggests that while Morgan Stanley sees some improvement in the company's earnings outlook, it does not yet consider the stock's risk-reward profile sufficiently attractive.
Competition in the paints industry has been increasing. Companies are having to focus more on pricing and promotions to defend their market share.
If competitive intensity rises further, profit margins could come under pressure.
For Berger Paints, investors will therefore need to closely monitor demand recovery, sales growth and margins in the coming quarters.

What Do These Brokerage Calls Signal for the Market?
Taken together, these reports offer a fairly clear picture of the current sectoral outlook.
In the defence sector, rising government procurement and the focus on domestic manufacturing are strengthening the long-term outlook for companies such as HAL.
In the cables and electrical sector, increasing demand from infrastructure, power, solar and digital connectivity is creating growth opportunities for companies such as Finolex Cables.
The IT sector, however, continues to face some uncertainty. While technology budgets are expected to improve, the longer-term impact of AI on the traditional IT services business remains difficult to assess.
Meanwhile, rising online beauty and fashion spending is a positive for Nykaa, while increasing competition remains a challenge for margins across the paints sector.
Aurelius Business View
The latest global brokerage calls suggest that a stock-specific approach is becoming increasingly important in the Indian market. Not every sector is moving in the same direction, and the factors driving individual companies are also different.
For HAL, a strong order book and higher defence spending are clear positives, but investors will need to keep a close watch on execution and delivery timelines.
For Finolex Cables, strong quarterly performance, improving margins and capacity expansion are supporting the growth story.
Nykaa continues to offer a strong growth opportunity, although valuation cannot be ignored.
For Infosys, the pace of demand recovery and the impact of AI will remain the key factors to watch in the coming quarters. For Berger Paints, competition and margin sustainability will remain important monitorables.
Investors should therefore view these brokerage reports as indicators of potential market direction rather than direct buy or sell signals. The final investment decision should take into account a company's financial performance, valuation, sector outlook, management commentary and the investor's own risk profile.
